Hello, my name is Susan Farris and my hobby is learning about the law. I have an uncle who is an attorney and I've always looked up to him and that's why I find subjects on law very interesting. Through speaking with my uncle and doing research on my own, I've learned about all the different fields of law. Each field of law centers on its own subject and most attorneys specialize in a certain area of law. These include criminal, personal injury, family, bankruptcy, criminal, immigration and business. I find each one of these fields very interesting and I have the utmost admiration for lawyers because they help people through their legal struggles. I wanted to share this information with others who have questions about the different types of attorneys and the law.
When settling a divorce where kids are involved, the couple divorcing must take their time with discussing the issues related to the kids that they must settle and agree upon. There are basic issues that couples will already know about, but there are so many other issues that you or your spouse might never think about discussing, yet these issues can be important. Here are some of the issues you should discuss and settle relating to your kids.
Holidays, birthdays, and special occasions
If you do not make a plan for where the kids will be on holidays, birthdays, and other special occasions, you might run into problems when these events take place. You might assume you can have the kids for your birthday, while your spouse might have other plans. You might also assume the kids will come on Christmas, while your spouse might have plans to take them on vacation. Settling the matter of how you will split the visits for these types of events will eliminate a lot of confusion, arguments, and disappointments later on in life.
Parenting standards
It is also a great idea for couples to discuss parenting standards to try to get on the same page. If you do not do this, your kids may eventually figure out the system and lean in towards the parent who offers no discipline to them. Parenting standards can involve backing each other at times when kids do things that are wrong and can include the types of punishments and consequences you set for your kids when they do wrong things. Being on the same page with this will be better for your children in the long run.
Expenses for the kids
The parent without physical custody is likely the one who will pay support to the other parent, but this support is not designed to cover everything. There are many other expenses you should talk about during the divorce that you might want to split between the two of you. For example, when your children are old enough to drive or get a cellphone, who will pay for these expenses? It does not have to be the parent who has physical custody, even though that is often the default if an agreement is not made.
These are the types of issues you might not think of discussing, but they are important to talk about and decide on when going through a divorce.
